Spanish family drama Querer took home the prestigious Best Series award in the International Competition. The international jury, led by acclaimed actress, writer, and director Pamela Adlon, awarded Best Actress to Lili Reinhart for her performance in the Cooper Raiff-directed dramedy Hal & Harper. Best Actor went to Luca Marinelli for his portrayal of Benito Mussolini in Joe Wright’s historical biopic Mussolini: Son of the Century.
In the International Panorama category, Spanish drama Celeste claimed the Best Series award, further cementing Spain’s dominance at this year’s festival. The Belgian series Putain received a special mention. Celeste star Carmen Machi was also recognized with the Best Actress award, while Matthew Gurney won Best Actor for his role in the British crime drama Reunion. Iranian director Ida Panahandeh earned the Best Director prize for her work on At the End of the Night.
"We made a selection of works that were very open to the world, and we're delighted that the prizes reflect these choices by rewarding, among others, an American independent series, an Israeli series, an Algerian series, and an Iranian series," said Laurence Herszberg, founder and general manager of Séries Mania. "The two major international prizes also confirm the prominent place of Spanish series in today's serial landscape."
